National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech) held “University Mobility in Asia and Pacific (UMAP) Vice President and Staff Forum” on May 11, 2010 with aims to familiarise UMAP to all universities in Taiwan and promote internationalisation of Taiwan. YunTech, as UMAP Taiwan National Secretariat, invited all vice presidents and staffs working for international affairs at Taiwan’s universities. In this high competitive era, Ministry of Education, MOE, has emphasised Internationalisation over the past several years. Participating international education organisations is one of the ways to improve universities’ quality and internationalisation.
UMAP, founded in 1993, is a voluntary association of government and non-government representatives of the higher education sector in Asia and the Pacific. The objective of UMAP is to raise international awareness through the mobility of university students and staff in Asia and the Pacific. Up to January, 2010, there are 21 member countries and 364 participating universities. Taiwan will be UMAP international secretariat from 2011 to 2015.
YunTech, as UMAP National Secretariat, invited Dr. Cheng-Chen Chen, Vice President, University System of Taiwan and Dr. Lily Chen, CEO, Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan (FICHET) in the first section. Dr. Cheng-Chen Chen delivered his presentation on the topic “The Cooperation System in UST”, whereas Dr. Lily Chen further explained “Regional Associations for International Education and Campus Internationalization”. In the afternoon section, two forums, UMAP Vice-President Forum and Staff Forum, took place at the same time. “UMAP Vice President Forum”, hosted by Dr. Shang-Chia Chiou, Vice President of YunTech, discussed on UMAP prospect of Taiwan and International Secretariat. The four discussants, including Dr. Dira Berman, International Student Counselor, National Chengchi University, Dr. Evan Berman, University Chair Professor, National Chengchi University, Dr. Teresa L. Ju, Dean, Centre for International Affairs and Public Relations, Lunghwa University of Science and Technology and Dr. Tsang-yao Chen, Elite Study In Taiwan Program Office, ESIT, Chung Yuan Christian University, shared their viewpoints on “Experience Sharing of Universities and Students Exchanges in Asia and the Pacific” at the UMAP Staff Forum hosted by Professor Chung, Dean, Office of International Affairs, YunTech.
UMAP Vice President and Staff Forum are expected to provide a platform to strengthen the cooperation between all tertiary education institutions and UMAP participating universities in Taiwan, as well as for the participants to share their experiences of international exchange and further improve competitiveness in education. |
